Casa Magna Domus Magnus Limitada

Monday, September 5th, 2011

I picked up these cigars at Ed’s shop recently. I’ve been a fan of the Casa Magna Colorado for years now. When Ed told me he had these, I immediately picked a few up. They are in limited quantities, which probably helped my decision. With anticipation, I quickly smoked what I bought, and offer you my thoughts.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Sun Grown

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Size: 5.75 x 52

Price: $8.95

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper leaf was virtually flawless and had a nice chocolaty look. The smell of the wrapper had a mild spice and wood. The foot was pretty much the same. The cigar was packed evenly for the most part, maybe a lump here and there. The pre-light draw had slight resistance, and had a strange flavor. It was nutty but not in the traditional sense.

The ash held for over an inch. The burn didn’t require any corrections. It did get wavy from time to time, but it always corrected itself.

Flavor:

This cigar didn’t have a ramp up period, it went right into the flavors. It kind of threw everything at me at once. Up front was wood and nuts. There was a nice blast of pepper. No exhaling the entire draw through the nose on this cigar, you’d burn your face off. A chocolaty bitterness came about after about 1.5 inches in. There was an interesting citrusy sensation mixed in there as well. My crude palate could have very well missed something. This thing was a flavor bomb.

The second third calmed down a bit, and I didn’t get overwhelmed with flavors. It seemed to settle into a more straight forward flavor profile. The dominant flavor was a rich chocolate with the associated bitterness (not bad bitterness). The pepper didn’t go anywhere and kept it’s zing. Nuttiness with woody notes were there as well. The dominant flavor remained rich chocolate a lot of the time. It did take turns with nuttiness and wood at times. It is worth mentioning that sometimes I got that citrus feeling as well. It was a flavor bomb, but my primitive palate started to get the hang of it.

The last third continued the same pace as the second third, in terms of flavors. No point in repeating myself. The body did creep higher into the full range, but didn’t kick my ass. Otherwise the flavors switched up nicely just as they did before. Very nice.

Conclusion:

This was a damn good full bodied cigar. Looking back at what I wrote in this review, I don’t know if I gave it justice. I may have well just wrote “Damn good, try it!” Too bad this is limited in quantity. I’d love to have this in my regular rotation of cigars. Go try this now!

The History of Tabacalera Falto

Saturday, September 3rd, 2011

I am often a sucker for small boutique cigar companies. They often are more focused on quality in smaller quantities. Such is the case of Falto cigars, which at times reminds me of Canimao, another small boutique company. These cigars require your attention due to their subtle flavor delivery.

The 28 minute video below get’s in to the history and mentality of Luis Falto and his cigar company. While this is a promotional video, I still found it interesting. The video is sub-titled, but I enjoyed it and thought a few of you may feel the same.

Falling For My Cigars

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

All right… how the hell can it be September already? How in the name of God is summer almost over? How in the world could we have an earthquake and hurricane in the same week? This is the kind of stuff that boggles the mind, but with the help of my hand-rolled happy sticks, I somehow seem to get through it all.

TRMTWhile time is shooting by at a breakneck speed, I certainly do love the fall season. It’s just so nice sitting outside in gorgeous weather while smoking cigars and drinking my libation of choice with my buddies, as the colors turn here in the northeast… pretty damned relaxing and soothing to the soul. School starts as the daughter is back to college, my son back in high school, and I have a quiet house all to myself during the day, allowing me to bring all of you this cigar-laden goodness with a fresh piece of mind. And, oh yeah… did I forget to mention football? High School, college, pro – I watch it all during the fall. I simply can’t imagine what most of America would have done without an NFL season if the lockout had continued. Damn, maybe we would have had to spend more time with the loved ones doing family stuff?… Nah… We’d probably just up our cigar consumption on Saturday’s, Sunday’s, and Monday nights. That would certainly be the manly thing to do.

Now, I don’t smoke in the house, so I don’t smoke during the games, and every year I say the same thing: I need a man cave. While my supposed better half doesn’t want to negotiate terms, I’ve been thinking about just going for it and surprising her when she gets home.

“Come on, honey, what the hell do we need a bedroom for, anyway? We can camp out in the living room, I mean really, where the hell is your sense of adventure?” Okay, I am admittedly completely full of Shinola, but a guy can dream… right? While it sounds nice in theory, I think the doghouse would be my new place of residence. But it’s this kind of creative goal setting that keeps my motor runnin’.

Autumn-1What I’ve actually been toying with is finally getting myself an iPad®, not only to do work on, but I can use the wi-fi to tap into my cable account and watch football and hockey in the garage and smoke cigars ‘til they have to pry me outta my chair with a giant spatula! Yeah baby, I think this is a ‘must’ purchase so I can enjoy the hand-rolled fruits of Nicaragua, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic, as I scream at the dumbass refs, and whoever is attempting to knock off my team! Okay, it’s like $800 plus bucks… we can probably cut down on food money, new clothes, and hygiene products for a while. That’s it… I’ve convinced myself that this is an essential purchase, something that no pigskin rootin, beer guzzling, stogie sucking, man-card carrying Neanderthal can’t be without! Ah, cool crisp Sunday afternoons hanging out in football heaven while enjoying my La Gloria Cubana Serie R Maduros, Gurkha Colorados, and the full range of JR Alternative Edicion Limitadas! Wow, I am loving this thought more and more with every passing minute! Being an idea man certainly has its advantages.

Hey, I realize that summer’s not officially over, but for all intents and purposes, it’s time to move on with the changing of the seasons. To me, the Fall is the nicest time of year to pound those Partagas, toke those Trinidads, and enjoy those El Rico Habanas! I am officially ready to take on Autumn with a cigar smoking vengeance, and I hope all of my Brothers of the Leaf will join me in my never ending quest for premium aged tobacco euphoria.

I am your puro patriot in good standing, ‘til next time,

E.P. Corrillo Core Line

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

I picked up the cigar up for review today at a local shop. I’m always on the lookout for cigar that I haven’t tried, and this one caught my eye. That’s really it, no big story or buildup to the review. As always, paired with water and gave the E.P. Corrillo Core Line a try. Let’s see how it went.

Wrapper: Ecuador

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaraguan & Dominican

Size: Golosos 6 1/4 x 60

Price: $7.25

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper had a nice yet rugged look to it. There were some good sized veins and a toothy (bumpy) appearance – rugged. The wrapper had a hayish smell, and the foot was more sweet. The cigar was evenly packed and slightly soft when squeezed. The pre-light draw had slight resistance with a flavor of sweet earthiness and natural sweet tobacco.

The ash held for about 1.5 inches, and the burn required no corrections.

Flavor:

The first third started off with simple earthiness with a woody background. As time went on, the flavors developed. When passing smoke through the nose, there was a slight spice with a tinge of sweetness. After about 1.5 inches, the main flavor was a dry sweet cocoa. Behind it were woody and earthy notes, along with a mild spice. The smoke feel was smooth and dry.

The second third went well. The main flavor was cocoa along with coffee notes. At times it was dry and powdery, and other times it was buttery and creamy. Like before, woody notes were in the background. Behind that, occasionally I picked up a faint earthiness. The spice had a slight increase in strength, which was most noticeable when passing smoke through the sinus.

The last third: The smoke feel really thickened up to a sweet creaminess with a buttery feel. I should mention that sometimes I’d take a draw and it would go back to a dry feel. Wood, coffee, and cocoa were the main flavors. None dominated the other, they all were equal. The spice took on a peppery feel with no harshness. It could be felt in the nose and via a tingle in the mouth.

Conclusion:

This was a good medium to upper medium bodied cigar. While not amazing, the variety of flavors were nice. The changes kept things interesting, and the construction was good. There is nothing bad to report. It boils down to individual preference as always. If my description sounds appealing to you, I’d say pick a few up and give it a try.
