“Post” Holiday Cigars – Yes, There’s Such a Thing, by Tommy Zman

Thank God the gluttony gorge-fest is over and done with and praise the lord if I’m able to pay my bills for the next couple of months. This holiday season drained the livin’ crap outta me, mentally, physically, and financially. I know I’ve been a Scrooge-ass, humbug, Grinch-ified bastid for the past couple of months, and  I claim justifiably so. NO, I did NOT go to Jared… NO, every kiss did not begin with Kay, and there sure as hell was NO bow covered luxury automobile in the driveway. The kids got the crap they wanted, the wife got clothes, etc, but once again, yours truly, the Social Cromag, got jacked!

Yeah, okay I got Christmas gifts – sweat pants, underwear, socks, bla, blabbitty, bla, bla. But guess what I didn’t get for the gazillionth year in a row… nobody got me cigars, dammit! What the heck is wrong with everyone, huh? Come on now, I hinted like a son of a bitch, hell, I even left the JR Catalog open with items circled in red, but to no avail whatsoever. I even walked around singing Christmas carols, replacing the real lyrics with the names of cigar brands interjected and nobody caught my more than obvious drift (deck the halls with San Lotano, Montecristo, Punch, Avo for lunch… I love me some San Cristobal, if you buy me these I’ll be your pal! Fa, la, la la la, la, la, La Gloria.)

Nothin’.

And you wanna know what completely sucks double dog-rockets? My birthday is December 30… five days after Christmas… and every freakin time, year in and year out, I hear the phrase, “I got you your combined birthday/Christmas present.” Oh sure, everybody else got a separate birthday present and a Chrsitmas present… but all because my parents had to get frisky nine months before the holidays, I have spent a lifetime getting gyped because nobody has any friggin money left after being wallet-raped by Rudolph and the so-called spirit of Christmas. Fal la la, my fat, white ash.

So now that the holiday madness has subsided, it seems like there’s some pretty damned good deals out ther in JR land. They’ve even put out a post holiday/New Year’s Catalog JAM PACKED with so many deals on your favorite smokes. Hey, listen to me right now… I don’t give a rat’s hairy ash how much you spent on holiday gifts, these deals are so awesome you are NOT going to want to miss out! I can always find a little extra room in the pay check for some La Auroras, JR Alternative Edicion Limitadas, Partagas, Romeo, and La Finca, and I know that you can too!

Gurkha Ghost

I found the cigar up for review at Ed’s shop. Gurkha is known for it’s fancy presentation, and the Ghost is no exception. You can read more about it HERE. The article mentions a Rolls Royce at IPCPR, a fancy holographic band, and information about the cigar itself. On to the review!

 

Wrapper: Brazilian Maduro

Binder: Dominican

Filler: Nicaraguan and Dominican

Size: Exorcist 6 x 60

Price: Around $8.00

1 Gurkha_Ghost cigars

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper had an oily sheen, with no flaws to be found. Off of the wrapper, I picked up an earthy and woody scent, while the foot had almost no odor at all. The cigar was evenly packed, and had just a little give when squeezed. The pre-light draw had slight resistance, and a flavor of bitterness and wood.

The first third required a good sized correction, and the flowery ash held for about 1.5 inches.

2 Gurkha_Ghost cigars

Flavor:

The first third had simple, yet interesting flavors. Earth and wood were up first, and it didn’t take long for fruity notes to join in. A very mild peppery spice was noticed, but only when retrohaling. After about an inch, the flavor profile was dominated by what I can only describe as fruit.

3 Gurkha_Ghost cigars

The second third saw some change. The smoke feel became buttery at times, and it had a tinge of sweetness. Wood, earthiness, and a little bit of pepper remained.

4 Gurkha_Ghost cigars

The last third had a slight increase in pepper, but it remained easy to pass through the nose. The sweet, buttery smoke feel became more consistent and became dominant. The earthy and woody flavors became subtle, which made the peppery spice stand out. The aftertaste had a nice, cinnamon tingle.

5 Gurkha_Ghost cigars

Conclusion:

This was a good medium bodied cigar. The crazy burn in the first third was limited to just one cigar, so I have to give that a pass. I really have nothing bad to say about the Ghost, but something about the flavor seemed lacking. The last third is really what I wished the whole cigar could have been. I can think of a few people who would disagree with that comment. So, as always, you should judge for yourself. It’s worth a try.
