A New Cigar Aficionado Online

Monday, September 20th, 2010
Flash back to 1997. The space station Mir was in orbit, the Dow Jones Industrial Average broke 7,000 for the first time, a computer program called Deep Blue made history by beating champion Gary Kasparov and Cigar Aficionado magazine launched its website, CigarAficionado.

Starry, Starry Night

Thursday, September 9th, 2010
The Big Dipper tilted across the western sky. A dazzling combo of Jupiter and Uranus had risen high in the east. And, about 10 men, nine Danes and an American (yours truly), were lighting up cigars after a night of revelry celebrating one of the Danes' 25th wedding anniversary.

A Fantasy Camp for the Rest of Us

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010
The problem with fantasy camps is they all assume a level of experience or ability that I don't have. You probably want to have swung at a fastball some time recently before you go off to baseball camp to face down a major league pitcher. And if you're going to rock'n'roll fantasy camp, you might first want to have spent some time jamming with other musicians, not just strumming chords in your basement while the cat wails.

Branching Off The Label

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
Just got a bottle of Basil Hayden's Bourbon (which I adore) and rather than drinking it, I was perusing the label (which I generally deplore, but I'm on duty, and sometimes you have to learn about liquor the hard way—through reading).

Cigar Inventory

Monday, August 23rd, 2010
I'm getting ready to re-stock my personal cigar inventory. I've been fortunate in that most of the cigars I smoke are at work, and supplied as part of our tasting reports. But you've all seen 1. It's got a mix of cigars from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Cuba.

Release The Kraken!

...and the Sailor Jerry and the Cruzan 9 and the Black Beard and the Seven Tiki. Spiced rum, a drink category that virtually didn't exist before Captain Morgan stormed our shores in the early 1980s, is, well, spicing up the market. New brands are joining the fray and pulling it in new directions.

Saturday Report: 122 Cigars

Saturday, August 14th, 2010
I'm home from the IPCPR trade show going through my notes and all the cigars I brought home from the trip. I thought I'd put together a few numbers about what I found in New Orleans: 122 Cigars (all singles, none in boxes) brought back in my carry-on bag from the trip.

Thursday Report: More Smoke From New Orleans

Thursday, August 12th, 2010
There was sad news to report as the trade show began this morning. I found out that Jean Clement, the cigarmaker who was better known by the name of his cigars, Juan Clemente, died here at the trade show. (Read our obituary to the man 1.) But, as with all things in this world, life must go on, and so did the trade show.
