Montecristo Media Noche

While digging through the humidor I pulled out today’s review. Where I bought it is a mystery to me. I also lack some blend information, so if you know, please let me know. I think what drew me to purchase this cigar was the extremely dark wrapper. It just looks like a cigar that I would like. So as always, I filled my glass of water and offer you my thoughts of the Montecristo Media Noche.

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro

Binder: ???

Filler: Nicaragua, Peru, Dominican

Size: 5 x 55

Price: Around $9.00

Pre-smoke & Construction:

The dark, almost black maduro wrapper looked good. It had a few medium sized veins with only a small blemish or two. I say this often… The wrapper had an earthy odor with an addition of poo. Basically it smelled like rich soil with poop. This isn’t always a bad thing, and quite often means you are about to have a nice smoke. The foot had a similar odor but was more earthy and spicy. The pre-light draw was good, and had a simple sweet earthy taste. The cigar was firmly packed with no soft or hard spots.

The ash required a couple corrections in the first third, and the ash held for over an inch.

The first third opened up with a dark sweetness with earthy undertones. Peppery spice was easily noticed when passing the smoke through the nose.

The second third kept that full peppery spice. The earthiness seemed to become more woody in taste. A simple sweetness would come and go. I can only compare it to a cocoa “Maduro-ish” flavor. Towards the end of this third, the pepper began to calm slightly.

The last third saw an addition of a creamy smoke feel. The pepper really calmed down and allowed the woodiness to stand out. The earthiness almost went away completely. The sweetness took a back seat as well. And really, there wasn’t much more to the flavors then that.

This was a good full bodied cigar. Although the flavor profile wasn’t the most complex, I really enjoyed the full, refined nature of this cigar. My only real complaint is the price. If it were 5 or $6.00 I’d be more prone to pick more of these up. Price aside, I say this is worth a try for those of you who enjoy a refined full bodied cigar.
