Rocky Patel Vintage 2003 Cameroon

Monday, October 31st, 2011

The cigar up for review today is touted as medium bodied, with aged Cameroon wrapper and 8 year old binder and filler. From Rocky’s website, they claim it is rich with complex flavors of white pepper, dark chocolate, espresso and sweet spice. It sounded like they were worth a try, so I picked a few up. As always I paired this cigar with water. Let’s see how my experience with the Vintage 2003 Cameroon compares to Rocky’s claims.

Wrapper: Cameroon

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Dominican and Nicaragua

Size: Robusto 5.5 x 50

Price: $6.65

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper glistened with oils and had minimal veins. There was some discoloration but it didn’t take away from the overall appearance. The odor of the wrapper and foot reminded me of a barnyard. The cigar was rock solid to the touch and evenly packed. This resulted in a draw that was a bit snug. The pre-light draw had an interesting sweet flavor and I couldn’t find anything to compare it to.

In the last third, the fragile Cameroon wrapper started to split pretty badly, but I smoked through it with no problem. The ash held for around an inch, and I did one burn correction.

1 Rocky_Patel_Vistage_2001_Cameroon cigars

Flavor:

The first third began with an easy pepper, but not your traditional hot black pepper. There was a definite bitterness associated with black coffee or espresso. There was a slight earthiness and wood way in the background. The easy spice lingered on the aftertaste with black coffee.

2 Rocky_Patel_Vistage_2001_Cameroon cigars

The second third did not have a lot of change. Through the nose, the pepper remained like in the first third. Black coffee with a tinge of sweetness dominated the flavor profile. At about the half way point the sweetness increased and resembled chocolate. Not the standard chocolate, but more of a dark chocolate or cooking chocolate.

3 Rocky_Patel_Vistage_2001_Cameroon cigars

The last third picked up on body a little, but remained in the medium range. Core flavors were coffee, bitter chocolate, and a spicy pepper. The pepper was still present but the smoke remained easy to pass through the sinus. A slight tingle was left in the mouth and on the lips on the aftertaste.

Conclusion:

This was a solid medium bodied, easy to smoke cigar. The flavors were interesting enough to not get bored. I could see some of you full bodied smokers getting bored with this one though. As for me, I enjoyed it. It wasn’t really anything special, but it did the job. I would prefer to pair this cigar with coffee. I think the Rocky Patel Vintage 2003 Cameroon is worth a try at the very least.

Halloween Herfing JR Cigars Style

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Ah, another October 31st is upon us, the day where witches, ghosts, ghouls and goblins roam the skies, trick or treatin’ chillins’ roam the streets, and if I’m lucky enough, a gaggle of hot young mommies will also make their way to my front door for a little helping of Zman’s candy. (Yeah, right, in your dreams, ya tubby, cigar sucking, Polack bastid.)

I’ve always dug Halloween and many consider it their favorite holiday, yet I have maintained for years that it’s not really an official American holiday, just some crazy celebration started by a bunch of heathenistic pagans many moons ago. I mean, the post office and banks are open, the kids are in school, and everybody is working as usual. Now, Wikipedia describes Halloween as: an annual holiday observed on October 31, which commonly includes activities such as trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films. So while I’m not sure what constitutes a real honest to goodness holiday, it’s still a cool day for celebrating wicked and wacky stuff… and, oh yeah… it is one hell of a fine day for smoking your favorite cigars!

Halloween has been a great cigar-smoking day for me for as long as I have enjoyed the lavish leafy luxury. Here in north Jersey it’s generally classic fall weather somewhere in the 50’s, cool enough where I throw on a jacket and hang out on my front porch with a big fat stoag dangling from my face and a thermos filled with my favorite, um, medicine. Okay, while I hide the booze from plain view of the kiddies, I make no skeleton bones about it that I am a cigar smokin’ freakazoid, and if you don’t wanna bring your yard ape to my front door for a heavenly helping of diabetic coma inducing treats, well, hey, that’s your call.

When we used to live in a condo development in town, there were literally hundreds of kids who came to the door and I went through a dozen bags of candy. But now our house is on a back street and we’re lucky if we even get five trick or treaters. But that’s fine with me because there’s plenty of chocolate left over, and it’s a fact that my body actually needs chocolate – no, I’m serious, it’s a real medical condition where the candy’s sugar mixes with the cigar’s nicotine to give me the energy I need to make through another grueling day of blog writing. And as you might expect, a few belts of single malt makes the world seem even that much better. (Hint: Freeze Peanut Butter cups then dip ‘em in coffee… I am telling you that is one devilish treat!)

I’ll tell you what, with the state of the economy, I guarantee you that a lot of porch lights will be out and curtains drawn on the count of who the hell really has the extra dough to buy stranger’s kids a bunch of goodies? I know this makes me sound like an old fart, but damn, when I was a kid you got stuff like huge homemade popcorn balls, Three Musketeer Bars the size of a Smart Car, and there was always some sweet old neighborhood lady that came to the door with a tray full of luscious, oversized candy apples. I’m not exactly sure when, but you started hearing about sickos on the news putting bad stuff in the fruit and candy and people started scaling back to packaged goods only. Then after a few economic downturns, your Hundred Thousand Dollar Bar is worth even less than that Lucent stock you were going to retire on.

But cheer up, my buthas and sistas of Halloweendom, because JR has more treats than your pillow sack can possibly even handle and I personally plan on smoking ‘til the witching hour and beyond. The only howling you’ll be hearing at 3am is if the premium hand rolled treats run out before the candy does. So unless you have a hankering for Henry Clay, you’re jonesing for JR Alternatives, or pining for Punch… you may as well stay clear of my most frightening abode. But if perhaps you’d like to join me in a La Flor Domincana Air Bender or a ligero laced Cain F (yeah, that’s right, JR carries ‘em) then there’s a place on my front porch waiting for your arrival. There are no tricks, but only treats when the Zman holds his Halloween herf!

Keep the FDA out of the cigar industry

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

If you smoke cigars, or even a small fan of them, take a moment and read on!

The cigar industry needs your help to exempt premium cigars from FDA regulation. H.R. 1639 / Senate Bill 1461 has been filed.  This legislation would decree that premium/traditional cigars should be off limits to FDA regulation.

Let’s face it, cigars have little in common with cigarettes, and we need to keep it that way. Should cigars fall under FDA regulation, the industry would be gone as we know it. What is their biggest ammo against cigars? Kids. Cigars are in no way marketed towards children. I believe protecting children should fall on the shoulders of those who chose to not use contraceptives. I am sick of protecting the children of lazy parents… But back to the topic at hand.

Some likely scenarios of FDA regulation are:

Regulate cigars in the same way that they regulate cigarettes.

Say goodbye to your premium cigars. The days of browsing the humidor would be gone.

No more cigar events.

You’ll have to ask for cigars behind the counter just like cigarettes at 7-11.

Blends would have to be FDA approved – No more flavor.

New taxes would be implemented to finance regulation. You thought SCHIP was bad.

Who know what else they’ll come up with. Their imagination is the limit.

How can you help? Cigar Rights of America has made it easy for you to pitch in. They have a link to a form that will take you minutes to fill out. OR you can print out this PDF and fax it. It’s that easy.

The FDA is corrupt and fascist, like many branches of government. They are owned by special interest lobbyists and corporations. What happened to “For the people?” Do you need government to help you protect you from yourself by limiting your choices? You’d think they have bigger things to worry about than a small niche market. Such is not the case. Let’s try to keep this one small pleasure intact! While the war on the middle class wages on, I want to at least be able to enjoy a cigar!

Take 5 minutes out of your life and pitch in!

Gurkha Park Avenue Maduro

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

Since I enjoyed the Connecticut wrapped Park Avenue, I figured I’d give this one a try. You can find them online easily and at a pretty cheap price. It is claimed that only 5000 boxes were made. Once they are gone, they are gone. I paired this cigar with water and offer you my thoughts…

Wrapper: Habano Maduro from Jalapa, Nicaragua

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Size: Torpedo 6.2 x 52

Price: $3.00

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper was blotchy looking and a bit ugly. For the price I don’t expect a pristine dark maduro look. The wrapper had a different smell to it. It was earthy with a mild soapy odor (I swear!). The cigar was rock solidly packed with tobacco. The pre-light draw was a little to stiff for my liking, which I found to be common with these cigars. The pre-light flavor was earthy.

The ash held for around an inch, and the burn required no corrections.

1 Gurkha_Park_Avenue_Maduro Cigars

Flavor:

The first third started off with earthiness and a mild pepper. After an inch or so, a generic sweetness gradually made it’s way into the flavor profile. I also picked up a hint of woody notes.

2 Gurkha_Park_Avenue_Maduro Cigars

The second third had a dominant dry cocoa flavor. The earthiness fell into the background. The pepper stayed mild and was easy to move through the sinus. There were woody notes in the background. Simple but not bad.

3 Gurkha_Park_Avenue_Maduro Cigars

The last third continued with the dry cocoa flavor. It almost drowned out everything else, which isn’t a bad thing. The peppery spice through the nose remained mild and had a woody aftertaste.

4 Gurkha_Park_Avenue_Maduro Cigars

Conclusion:

This was a decent mild to medium bodied cigar for the price. It was pretty uneventful but the flavors were decent. The only bad aspect is construction. Out of the dozen or so that I’ve had, more then half of them had tight draws. I know this is a value cigar, but I expect a good draw. Over all, I prefer the Connecticut wrapped version of this cigar. The flavors just seem to be better and more refined. The Park Avenue is basically just another cigar.

Cain F Lancero

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Thanks to my pal John G for donating this cigar the other day at the Dream Theater concert. About the cigar… It isn’t for sale. You can’t order it or buy it at the cigar shop. Apparently it is limited to those who buy a Studio Tobac sampler, which is only available at Studio Tobac events. This is why I’ve only smoked one of these, which makes this a first impressions review. I’m not big on the Cain cigars, but I’ve had some decent ones along with others that were less than desirable. I’m always willing to try something new, and the Cain F Lancero showed potential to be a good smoke.

1 Cain_F_Lancero cigars

Wrapper: Nicaragua

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Size: Lancero 7 x 38

Price: N/A

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper was virtually flawless, just a few medium sized veins here and there. The odor of the wrapper was barnyard. The foot smelled earthy and hay-ish. The cigar was solidly packed with tobacco, but was slightly spongy towards the foot. The pre-light draw had slight resistance, and had a flavor of earth and cedar.

The ash held for about 3/4 inch, and the burn required no corrections.

2 Cain_F_Lancero cigars

Flavor:

The first third came out of the gate with a full bodied kick. While there was that familiar Nicaraguan zing, it was pretty smooth and easy to move around the mouth and sinus (as long as I was careful). There wasn’t a lot of complexities in the flavor. Pepper and wood was all I could pick up on. Not complex, but not bad.

3 Cain_F_Lancero cigars

The second third kept the same woody and peppery core. At about the half way point, the smoke felt thicker with a tinge of sweetness. This thick sweetness lingered on the aftertaste. Again… Simple, full bodied, full strength but not bad. Towards the end of this third, the sweetness increased in strength and mingled nicely with the pepper and wood.

4 Cain_F_Lancero cigars

The last third had wood, pepper, and a coffee like bitterness. Not the bad kind of bitterness, but the kind associated with black coffee. The sweetness went down a notch, falling to the background.

5 Cain_F_Lancero cigars

Conclusion:

This was a good full bodied, full strength cigar. It may be the most pleasant Cain cigar that I’ve had. I think the Lancero size should be in full production. It was more balanced in flavor and strength then the other Cain’s I’ve had. I think most full bodied smokers would appreciate this cigar.

LOVE Cigars?… JR Cigar Tube’s Got Nathan & the Zman for Ya

Monday, October 24th, 2011

JRCigarTube.ComingDear friends, colleagues, and enjoyers of the JR Cigar Blog… today I ask if it’s okay with you if I take this opportunity to shill for a moment? I mean, I’m not sure why I’m asking, this is my blog and I can shill to my fat little Polak dupa’s content. Well, technically I guess you don’t have to read it, but that would seriously be a mistake because I love to talk about cigars, and somehow I have a feeling just because you’re here, you must love those hand rolled little beauties yourself.

To get to the point, the incomparable Steve Nathan and I have been doing our weekly show, JR Cigar Tube with Nathan and the Zman, since May and the response has been just terrific with close to 50,000 downloads of the You Tube channel. I personally wanted to say THANKS to all of you who have watched and supported us. It personally means a lot to me… and, um, well… while Steve is asleep at his desk right now, if he was conscious, I’m sure he’d thank you, too. Now… to you guys who don’t watch our show and have never even seen the Z2comedic stylings and unparalleled knowledge of the puro patriots in action, all I can say is WHAT THE HELL, MAN?! Come on, dude… you read this blog… I mean we’re pals, right? You know I’ve got mouths to feed, a daughter in college, and a tobacco habit that rivals the gross national product of most third world countries. Do I have to spell this out any clearer, amigos?

Listen, man, all I’m asking is that you give the show a try. Watch a couple short little episodes and if it doesn’t bring a smile to that Corojo encrusted face of yours, we will be simply shocked. Actually Steve will be mortified and probably placed on additional medications, but he tends take these things a bit more personal than I do. He’s the only guy I know who can legally take Zoloft from a Picture 2Tweety Bird Pez dispenser.

The knowledge you’re gonna walk away with from the show even astounds us at times. We have covered a huge gamut of cigar-induced goodness, all with the purpose of entertaining, educating, and hopefully making you laugh you firm white ash off. We’ve covered such mind numbingly awesome subjects like, Body vs. Strength vs. Flavor and what it all means… The world of different wrappers (although I was a bit confused and thought it was about rappers – big difference I found out.)… Teaching your lady how to smoke a cigar… Bargain Cigars that Picture 2.Ataste great but don’t break the wallet… Cigar Terminology, the Magnificent Maduro… How to age your cigars, Humidors and proper storage… How cigars are made from seed to box, and an entire slew of leaf related esoteric stogieness that you couldn’t possible sleep another night without knowing. And we even have our JR Mailbag show where we actually answer your most intimate tobacco related inquiries – we cannot be stumped people, so don’t even try. Just ask us what you wanna know, and we shall deliver the smoke filled goods!

Then there’s the plethora of cigar brands that we carry, as we give you the low down on their flavor profiles, countries or origins, sizes and shapes, yada, yada, yada. I’m proud to say that in only a few short months we have turned many a Picture 1viewer onto new smokes that they never tried, never heard of, or just had misconceptions about. So many great smokes like the Gurkha Colorado made exclusively for JR, the La Finca (trust me, cuz it ain’t no stinka), Montecristo Red, Pepin Blue, our very own JR Ultimate line of delicious hand mades… and the cigar that I feel is the best value we offer, the JR Alternative Edition Limitada – dark, rich, oily, and oh so tasty, I can’t get enough of this full bodied gem.

Come on, guys, this is your pal, Tommy Z., asking you to watch a couple of short, 5 minutes episodes and tell us what you think. Don’t deprive me and Steve the opportunity to retain gainful 140employment while feeding our children who depend upon your continued support. YA GOTTA CLICK HERE > to watch all present and past episodes… www.youtube.com/jrcigartube

And if you have a question for me and the magnificent Mr. Nathan, email us at this address and your question just might end up on en upcoming episode of the Nathan & the Zman Show! > experts@jrcigars.com

Fonseca Cubano Limitado

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

What drew me to purchase this cigar was it’s attractive looking wrapper and minimalist presentation. No big build up here, I liked what I saw and the result is today’s review. I paired this cigar with water as always. Let’s see how it went.

Wrapper: Honduran Cuban seed

Binder: Dominican and Nicaraguan

Filler: Dominican

Size: Toro 6 x 50

Price: Around $6.25

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper was toothy but velvety smooth in appearance. The odor off of the wrapper was cedar. The foot had more of a sweet spicy smell. The cigar was solidly packed, with a few minor soft spots here and there. The pre-light draw had slight resistance, and had a dark earthy and woody flavor.

The ash held for around an inch, and the burn required one minor correction.

1 Fonseca_Cubano_Limitado cigars

Flavor:

The first third opened up with smooth earthiness. It took about an inch before a dark woodiness joined in. When passing smoke through the sinus, it virtually flavorless. Most of the flavors were only detectable on the tongue. Retro-haling basically did nothing.

2 Fonseca_Cubano_Limitado cigars

The second third shared the same earthy and woody flavors. The smoke feel thickened up a bit and boarded on creaminess. There was a tinge of sweetness in the aftertaste. When passing smoke through the sinus, a slight spice developed.

3 Fonseca_Cubano_Limitado cigars

The last third changed into more of a creamy woody flavor with some sweetness added in. There was more spice in the retro-hale. The body and strength increased a little but remained in the medium to upper medium range.

4 Fonseca_Cubano_Limitado cigars

Conclusion:

This was an OK medium bodied cigar. It started out kind of boring, but gradually builds into a more satisfying experience. Construction, burn, and ash were good. To steal a line from Ed, this was “Just another cigar.” Nothing bad, nothing great. Just OK.

La Gloria Cubana Artesanos Retro Especiale

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Not too long ago General Cigars send me a fiver of the cigar up for review today. I appreciate it, as I have yet to find any in the area to try. I know what your thinking, this is a Connecticut wrapped cigar so it should be a pretty mild, boring experience. I’ve noticed a small trend of re-inventing the Connecticut wrapped cigar by a few companies, which is a good thing. As always, I paired with water.

Wrapper: Connecticut seed grown in Honduras

Binder: Mexican

Filer: Dominican, Nicaraguan

Size: 5.75 x 47

Price: $7.00

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper had a velvety brown appearance, with a couple medium sized veins. The smell of the wrapper was similar to compost. The cigar was well packed, but had a few minor soft spots here and there. The pre-light draw had some resistance, but fell within my tolerances. The pre-light flavor was earthy and natural tobacco.

The burn required no corrections, and the ash held solid for around an inch.

1 La_Gloria_Cubana_Artesanos_Especiale cigars

Flavor:

The first third started with a smooth earthiness, natural tobacco, and mild pepper. That pepper didn’t have any burning sensation like you’d get in black pepper. You could basically pass an entire draw through the nose with no problem. The smoke became somewhat creamy as I got further into this third. At the same time, the pepper developed a slight zing. There was some woodiness mixed in as well.

2 La_Gloria_Cubana_Artesanos_Especiale cigars.

The second third became more creamy and had a tinge of sweetness. A nice spice appeared at about the half way point. It wasn’t strong but it left a tingly coating in the mouth. Like before, there was woodiness and some earth.

3 La_Gloria_Cubana_Artesanos_Especiale cigars.

There isn’t a lot to say about the last third in terms of change. It was basically like the second third. The body and strength picked up a little, but that’s about it. It may sound boring, but it was quite good.

4 La_Gloria_Cubana_Artesanos_Especiale cigars.

Conclusion:

This was a good medium to full bodied cigar. I know I said this recently in another review, but this is a Connecticut wrapped cigar with a twist. It had some of the typical flavors I’d expect, but with an added strength in flavors and body. For many, this wouldn’t be a good morning cigar. For the seasoned smoker, this could fit almost any time of the day. I say give these a try.

Whats NEW? I’ll tell ya WHAT’S NEW!…

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Somehow, after four whole years of writing this blog, I think you guys get the idea that I love cigars. I love the tastes, the textures, the aromas, and the relaxing act of shmokin’ with my buddies (otherwise commonly known as herfing.) Walking through a cigar store ignites my senses, shopping online drives me wacky, and plopping down either my hard earned cash or a chunk of security coded plastic gives me a rush because I know that the horde of hand rolled happiness I just purchased is coming home to papa. Listen, I’m well aware that I have issues, but I’m going to make a little side bet here that you do, cigar-smokerstoo.

I’d have to say that one of the things that jacks me up the most is the arrival of new cigars at my place of premium tobacco purchase. And nothing is getting me giddier than our very own site, JR CIGARS.com, as there is an absolute plethora of new brands, new blends, and smiling, happy faces… especially mine! I’m tired of hearing from people who are NOT in the know, spouting un-truths that JR ONLY carries the old guard brands. There is in fact so much new stuff here in JR-land that your head would spin trying to take count. I’m even having trouble keeping up with it all, as it’s my own personal rule that I’ve gotta try EVERYTHING and ANYTHING new that we get in stock!

Picture 15First off, I’m psyched as all hell that Alec Bradley is now on the team! The Tempus and the American Classic Blend are a couple of the hottest cigars out there, along with the arrival of the sought after Black Market coming very soon! Miami Cigars has brought us the incredibly flavorful La Aurora 107, Rocky Patel sends us a bunch of his hand rolled happiness, including my fave, the Edge, and several of his Vintage Lines. Oliva’s specialty line known as Studio Tobac has delivered the triple ligero laced Cain and Cain F line, as well as the squat little powerhouse known Picture 16simply as the NUB, with it’s different delicious wrappers. And while I’m not admittedly a lover of flavored smokes, Ted’s Cigars has brought us several infused beauties that really turned my head… the Makers Mark, Grand Marnier, and Hopz.

Now there’s one cigar maker who has captured the world by storm with his amazing talent for blending some of the most sought after brands in the world today. I’m referring to none other than Jose Pepin Garcia, most affectionately known as Don Pepin. With his brand spankin’ new My Father Factory in Estelli , Nicaragua, the old boy has increased production dramatically, and the quality is even better than before. He and his son Jaime are blending a bunch of savory sticks that I just can’t get enough of… The La Aroma de Cuba line, including the sensational Mi Amor… There’s the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial, (just outstanding), Don Pepin Garcia Series JJ (wickedly flavorful) the Classico Black Edition (Complex & full flavored) and the spicy and exquisite Don Pepin Garcia Blue! And of course, I can’t forget the My Father, created in secret by Jaime as a tribute to his dad, and My Father Le Bijou 1922. Freakin’ YUM all across the board, people!

And just when you thought you couldn’t get enough of the man know as Don Pep-eeeeeen, he also blends the sweet and full-bodied San Cristobal for Ashton, as well as the delicious new edition, the San Cristobal Elegancia, with its lighter wrapper, smoothing out the cigar giving it a whole new flavor profile.

Guys, I know I did the major league shill thing, here, today, but I am genuinely excited about all the new stuff on the JR website because it is all super premium, high quality great tobacco! I’ve smoked every one of the cigars I named and each one of ‘em, fills the countless humidors I have strewn around my abode (much to my wife’s displeasure… too bad.)

It’s just amazing that in a time when the Smoke Nazis, anti-smoking clods, and tax hammering governmental freaks continue to pound cigar lovers up the ash, the industry is putting out the best products ever made. And to that, I raise my robusto high, and say muchas gracias to the marvelous manufacturers of the cigar world!

Peace, Out…
