Bucanero Salsa

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Bucanero was kind enough to send me a few sticks of their Salsa line. I know very little about their various lines of cigars, so I was curious to do this review. With a price of around $3.50 a stick, it definitely falls in to the value or lower price range. As always, I paired this cigar with water, and offer my review of the Bucanero Salsa.

Wrapper: Criollo

Binder: Honduras

Filler: Dominican & Nicaragua

Size: 6 x 54

Price: Around $3.50

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The oily wrapper had a slight toothy appearance with small to medium veins. The odor coming off of the wrapper and foot was an earthy hay and barnyard. Overall the cigar was evenly packed, and bounced back when squeezed. The pre-light draw was a tad snug, but within my tolerances for being good. The pre-light taste was earthy and a tad grassy.

The burn required one significant correction in the first third, but evened out after that. The ash held for just about one inch.

Flavor:

The first third had a simple smooth earthy flavor. Behind that was a grassy note. What stood out the most was a natural tobacco flavor. You may think that’s a cop out description, but that’s what it tasted like. When passing smoke through the nose, there was a smooth pepper that had a slight zing.

The second third kept those core earthy and natural tobacco flavors. The grassy notes would come and go. Every now and then I would pick up  a sweet coffee flavor, much like putting sugar in your coffee. It was subtle and was not consistent. The pepper remained pretty consistent to what it was in the first third.

The flavors really smoothed out in the last third. Like before, the grassy notes would come and go. Earthy notes, natural tobacco, and sweet coffee were the main flavors. The pepper remained about the same as before, and perhaps became a little smoother. It still kept a little bite though.

Conclusion:

This was a decent medium bodied cigar. I think it easily lived up to it’s price point as a bargain or value cigar. I have heard various opinions on Bucanero cigars, good and bad, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Luckily all of the Salsa’s I smoked gave me a good, simple smoking experience. As I often say, you should judge for yourself. Bucanero sells directly from their website, so a five pack would be worth checking out.
