Perdomo Fresco (Maduro)

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Don’t be fooled with all this talk of the recession being over. One in ten people are unemployed, and some people are getting excited about the stock market reaching levels it saw TEN YEARS AGO. America… I’m not an alarmist. I’m just saying a new “Normal” is taking shape in the ol US of A. Many of us are pinching pennies “Just incase.” This brings me to today’s review. It is a bundled, long filler value cigar. I am looking for a good smoke that is cheap, but still isn’t like those nasty cigars my Grandfather smoked back in the day. Will the Perdomo Fresco Maduro fit the bill? I grabbed a glass of water and found out…

Wrapper: Maduro

Binder: Jalapa Valley

Filler: Esteli

Size: Robusto 5 x 50

Price: Around $2.00

Overall the wrapper looked good, with minimal veins. Sniffing it reminded me of rich soil, and the foot had almost no odor. The cigar was packed fairly hard, and the pre-light draw had slight resistance. Doing a dry puff had almost no taste, basically natural tobacco.

The burn required only a couple minor touch-ups, and the ash held for about an inch.

Flavor:

The first third opened up with simple, subtle, sweet earthy notes. I say “Notes” because the flavors didn’t stand out, they were subtle. Hints of woodiness lingered along with a slight sweet spice. The smoke feel was smooth and dry.

Woody flavors took the main stage in the second third. Some draws had fairly strong woody flavors, while other draws didn’t. The earthy notes lingered far in the background, and I found sweet woody spice when exhaling through the nose. The smoke feel remained dry and smooth, and there was plenty of smoke.

As expected, the last third didn’t offer a lot of change. Sweet woodiness dominated the flavor profile. The earthy notes remained far in the background, and I still got a slight sweet spice when retro-haling. The smoke feel didn’t change and remained dry. I still enjoyed the plumes of smoke that poured off of this thing.

Conclusion:

This was a pretty good medium bodied cigar. I think you easily get your moneys worth, and then some. I can see this being a good smoke any time of the day. I can’t say I was Wowed by the flavors, but for the price, it lived up to what I was expecting. I say give this a try for a decent value cigar.
