Tom’s Favorites of 2010

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

It’s that time of the year again. Every cigar blog out there has their top 10, and I am not above making my own list.

My top cigars for 2010 list is a little different. My criteria is simple. I picked out some cigars that stood out throughout the year. The list isn’t limited to release date, popularity, or even the best tasting. Simply put… Any cigar that really stood out in my mind made this list.

Some of my choices may have some of you scratching your head. I bring to you my most memorable cigars of 2010:

5 – Tabacos Baez Serie SF – Before you say “What?!” Let me say, this doesn’t have a complex flavor profile. It isn’t the prettiest or best cigar out there. I even called it “One dimensional” in my review. But for the price point, I found myself reaching for these when I wanted a decent, CHEAP cigar.

4 – La Gloria Cubana Artesanoa De Tabaqueros – This cigar takes you on a journey by offering you two different wrappers on one cigar. From almost mild to full, along with nice flavors. Smoking this is a lesson on just how much the wrapper plays in the over all flavor profile.

3 – Cubao Maduro – What can I say… I loved the original Cubao. The maduro version was great as well. I went through a couple of boxes in 2010.

2 – Don Pepin Garcia My Father Le Bijou 1922 – Being a Don Pepin fan, I had high expectations, and they were met. This is just full bodied goodness.

And my number one pick is…

1 – Quesada Tributo – I probably smoked more of these then any other cigar this year. It took me a little while to warm up to them. But once I did, I couldn’t get enough. I still have a few of these a week.

And there you have it, my most memorable cigars of 2010.

Cubao Maduro

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

I am a big fan of the original Cubao. When I heard that a maduro wrapped version was out, I had to try it. I found these in Tampa and naturally picked a few up for review. The quick story on this cigar is… Don Pepin Garcia blended and makes this cigar for United Tobacco. Chances are, if Pepin has his hands in it, I’ll like it. Let’s see if this holds true for the Cubao Maduro.

Wrapper: Ecuador

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Size: Robusto Extra 6 1/8 x 50

Price: Around $7.00

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The dark brown maduro wrapper looked great, with only a few small to medium veins and no major flaws. The wrapper had almost no odor at all. I could only detect a slight sweet smell. The foot had more of a sweet spicy smell to it. Overall the cigar was evenly packed and had a good draw. The pre-smoke draw was a dark sweet flavor, similar to dark chocolate bitterness.

Flavor:

The first few puffs of the first third were smooth earthiness. It didn’t take long for a nice sweet peppery spice to kick in. The earthiness took a back seat, and allowed the sweetness to stand out. As I progressed further along, a coffee or espresso type of flavor joined in. The sweetness took on more of a cocoa tinge.  Meanwhile, the smoke feel became thick and creamy.

As I dug into the second third, the pepper calmed down a bit but kept a lot of bite. The smoke feel remained thick and somewhat creamy. The cocoa sweetness dominated the flavor profile. Coffee was next, along with a slight woodiness.

The last third increased in strength. The spicy pepper remained smooth but kept that familiar zing. At times the coffee was stronger then the cocoa, and at other times it was the opposite. Woody notes were still in the distant background. The smoke was dense, but lost a lot of it’s creaminess.

Conclusion:

This was a damn good full bodied cigar. There really isn’t anything more I can say. I will be smoking more of these. Give the Cubao Maduro a try!

Matt and I did yet another review over at The Stogie Review. The Cubao was introduced to me by a good friend. Shortly after trying it, I determined this was boxworthy.

I an posting the review here for archive purposes. Make sure you visit The Stogie Review now!
