Walt White – Slimming Down Dad

Friday, June 26th, 2015

I’ve been out of the cigar blog thing for some time now. It wasn’t a conscious choice. Nothing specifically caused it, or so I thought. It took quite some time before I really figured out what change has distracted me from reviewing cigars. I still smoke them, for the record.

Remember Walt from Stogie Review? I’ve known him for a number of years. Recently, he’s been changing some things in his life too.

Read on…

I tend to keep personal things personal. Struggling with weight fell into this category. Walt, on the other hand, did the exact opposite. He decided to hold himself accountable to his family, himself, and literally everyone. He has decided to be healthy, and document the journey on a podcast called Slimming Down Dad.

Check it out at slimmingdowndad.com.

What does this have to do with me? After listening to the first two episodes, I was compelled to join him on episode three. You can check it out HERE. We get a little long winded here and there, but I think the episode turned out well. I hope you join in and encourage Walt.

As for this site, I’m not sure when regular posts will return, or even if they will. I’m leaning towards finding a happy middle ground.

Gurkha Cellar Reserve

Friday, September 30th, 2011

As you all know by now, this review is posted here for archive purposes.

DSC07118

It’s that time again. Ed and I visited Stogie Review for our guest spot. This time we tackled the new Gurkha Cellar Reserve.

This cigar boasts having tobacco that is aged for 15 years. While I’m not a big Gurkha smoker, past reviews we’ve done have turned out well. We did enjoy the Cellar Reserve, but it took us on a weird journey. It started off kind of ho-hum, picked up the pace in the middle, then tapered back in to the ho-hum routine in the last third. Personally, I can’t justify the $12 price tag. But I bet there are a lot of Gurkha fans that will disagree, and that’s Ok.

So sit back as Ed and I pick apart the Gurkha Cellar Reserve. We ran a little long with some off topic banter, but that’s how we roll. This video runs about 24 minutes. Do yourself a favor and click the little HD button on the video player. Blip.tv has had sub-par video conversions as of late.

Casa Fernandez Cuban Seed Corojo 2006

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Ed and I are back to where it all started, the Stogie Review. As always, our videos are posted here for archive purposes. Call it a one stop shop for Ed and Tom reviews. In an effort to get back to our regularly scheduled visits, we made our August spot in the nick of time…

Ed and I have reviewed a lot of cigars. It is often an over thought process on what we should review next. This time around we just took a walk around the shop and picked something.

Be warned that this video runs a little long at 28 minutes. This is the type of review that is best viewed while you relax with a cigar and smoke along with us. We ultimately pick apart every aspect of this cigar and leave no stone unturned.

This video is also available in high definition simply by pressing the HD button on the video player. Lately Blip.tv has been doing horrible standard definition video quality. I’d go ahead and hit the HD button right off the bat.

Sunday Filler-Stinky Cigar Floor Ashtray

Saturday, August 20th, 2011

StinkyThanks to Stogie411.com, who on August 4th, 2011 had the Stogie Review guys on as guests. During the show, Walt put a question out to the live audience. I never enter cigar site contests, but this was an exception. Considering I have been following Stogie Review since 2007, I knew I would be an instant winner, which I was. The prize was this great Stinky Floor Ashtray you see here. I picked jet black powder coated finish of course.

The contest was sponsored by the East Coast Cigar Company, who promptly had the winning prize at my doorstep. I will use this ashtray for years to come. If your smoking area needs an ashtray, check out the variety of products that Stinky has to offer.

While your at it, pay attention to Stogie411.com, who has bi-weekly video casts not seen anywhere else. It goes without saying that Stogie Review is the king of cigar review websites. But every now and then somebody new pops up that is worth paying attention to.

By the way… Do you know the answer to the question that won me this prize? “What is the Stogie Review equivalent to a Rick Roll?” To my surprise, no one in the chat room knew. Duh… Winning…

Arturo Fuente Magnum R

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Ed and I returned to The Stogie Review to review a brand we haven’t done in quite some time. As always, I post the review here for archive purposes.

The Arturo Fuente Magnum R Is a nice medium bodied cigar that can appeal to the newest of smokers and the seasoned smoker. The key to enjoying this cigar is to notice the subtleties of the flavor profile. We discuss every aspect in this review.

So take 23 minutes of your time and check out the video. This video is also available for your viewing pleasure in 720p hi-def. Just press the HD button on the player after you begin watching.

Site Update–The Ed and Tom show

Saturday, July 9th, 2011

Many of you have been asking me lately… What’s up with reviews by Ed & Tom?! Read on…

Any new cigar review site who has asked me for advice has heard me say… Consistency is important. So now it is time for the Ed and Tom show to practice what I preach. With the success of Ed’s new shop, some complications were introduced in making video cigar reviews. I think we can now work around those issues.

EdandTom

Ed and I have a new review in the can, and we’ll be back on Stogie Review within the week. So stay tuned as we get back in to our old routine you’ve all come to expect.

It has been said by Jerry that the Stogie Review is your site – Yours, mine, everyone’s. It was that mindset that brought the Ed and Tom show into existence, as well as this site. This mindset remains true today. So keep an eye out over at Stogie Review. And yes, you will start seeing Ed and I over there more consistently. No more excuses!

My Father Le Bijou 1922

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Ed and I stopped by The Stogie Review once again for our monthly guest spot. As always, the review is posted here for archive purposes.

DSC06230

The My Father Le Bijou is blended by Don Pepin Garcia. I enjoy the Le Bijou more then the original My Father, which was blended by Don’s son, Jaime. While the flavors are simple and pretty straight forward, I think this is a great smoke.

With the additional capacity of the shop and addition of a lounge, there was a bit of activity taking place during the review. This sort of threw us off at times, which you will surely notice.

Since the straight forward flavor profile left us short for words at times, we sent a tweet out asking if anyone had anything to ask of Ed. Mike from MikesStogies.com chimed in, so Ed and I had some random banter about what we look for when buying cigars. Check out what we thought in this video cigar review.

Running time – 23 minutes.

Illusione Epernay

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

Ed and I finally blocked off some time and got together with Stogie Review founding member Walt. For the past couple of reviews, we’ve been moonlighting with Mike over at MikesStogies.com. While I can guarantee we’ll do more with him, we thought it was time to go back where it all started – The Stogie Review. This video review is posted here basically for archive purposes, like all of our guest spots on StogieReview.com.

!TheSEt

I’ve been a fan of the Illusione Epernay for awhile now. It was only recently that Mike from MikesStogies.com turned Ed and I on to the Le Monde size. Once Ed started carrying the Illusione lines, it was only a matter of time before we reviewed this cigar. There isn’t a lot I can say except it is an exceptional smoke with plenty of flavor. This cigar delivered, period.

So block off 26 minutes of your time and see what Walt, Ed, and I thought of the Illusione Epernay.
