La Palina El Diario

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Ed and I joined Mike, of Mikes Stogies and Stogie411, for a video cigar review. This time around, I tried recording our Skype call, as opposed to splicing together two video feeds. Because of this, the video is a little rough around the edges, but not bad at all. With any luck, in time, I can tweak things for a better end result.

In this video, we pick apart the La Palina El Diario. While it isn’t the most complex of cigars, it is by no means bad. It is clean on the palate, straight forward, and fairly consistent from beginning to end. Perhaps the pickiest of cigar smokers would get bored. As for the three of us, we enjoyed it. We covered all the pros and cons of this smoke.

Ed also talks a bit about his cigar tasting method. Being a tobacconist, Ed has schooled many, including Mike, and myself. In the review, I reference a video I made about this topic. You can check that out by clicking HERE.

Time for some shameless plugging:

Don’t forget to visit Mike’s Stogies, and Stogie 411. Mike’s Stogies is more of a traditional cigar blog. On the other hand, Stogie 411 has taken things up a notch. Aaand finally, if you’re ever in the St. Petersburg, FL area, you owe it to yourself to visit my pal Ed at St. Pete Cigar.

Video run time – 22 minutes.

Quesada Oktoberfest (2011 release)

Friday, November 11th, 2011

This video is posted here for archive purposes. Your one stop shop for Ed/Tom reviews if you will.

Ed and I are back at Stogie Review to cover the Quesada Oktoberfest. This yearly release is said to go best with Oktoberfest beer. Since I am not a drinker, I have not tried that pairing.

This cigar is fairly simple and straight forward in terms of flavor. What makes it shine is hard to describe. The flavor delivery, the refined flavor profile, the strength and body are almost perfectly balanced. The experience puts this in my top 3 cigars of 2011. This is a great cigar, period.

The biggest downfall of this cigar is it’s limited availability. It is a yearly release of limited production. Once they are gone, we have to wait until next year.

So take 24 minutes and check out our review of the Quesada Oktoberfest. As always, press the little HD button on the video player for 720p hi-def.

Gurkha Cellar Reserve

Friday, September 30th, 2011

As you all know by now, this review is posted here for archive purposes.

DSC07118

It’s that time again. Ed and I visited Stogie Review for our guest spot. This time we tackled the new Gurkha Cellar Reserve.

This cigar boasts having tobacco that is aged for 15 years. While I’m not a big Gurkha smoker, past reviews we’ve done have turned out well. We did enjoy the Cellar Reserve, but it took us on a weird journey. It started off kind of ho-hum, picked up the pace in the middle, then tapered back in to the ho-hum routine in the last third. Personally, I can’t justify the $12 price tag. But I bet there are a lot of Gurkha fans that will disagree, and that’s Ok.

So sit back as Ed and I pick apart the Gurkha Cellar Reserve. We ran a little long with some off topic banter, but that’s how we roll. This video runs about 24 minutes. Do yourself a favor and click the little HD button on the video player. Blip.tv has had sub-par video conversions as of late.

Casa Fernandez Cuban Seed Corojo 2006

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Ed and I are back to where it all started, the Stogie Review. As always, our videos are posted here for archive purposes. Call it a one stop shop for Ed and Tom reviews. In an effort to get back to our regularly scheduled visits, we made our August spot in the nick of time…

Ed and I have reviewed a lot of cigars. It is often an over thought process on what we should review next. This time around we just took a walk around the shop and picked something.

Be warned that this video runs a little long at 28 minutes. This is the type of review that is best viewed while you relax with a cigar and smoke along with us. We ultimately pick apart every aspect of this cigar and leave no stone unturned.

This video is also available in high definition simply by pressing the HD button on the video player. Lately Blip.tv has been doing horrible standard definition video quality. I’d go ahead and hit the HD button right off the bat.

Arturo Fuente Magnum R

Friday, July 15th, 2011

Ed and I returned to The Stogie Review to review a brand we haven’t done in quite some time. As always, I post the review here for archive purposes.

The Arturo Fuente Magnum R Is a nice medium bodied cigar that can appeal to the newest of smokers and the seasoned smoker. The key to enjoying this cigar is to notice the subtleties of the flavor profile. We discuss every aspect in this review.

So take 23 minutes of your time and check out the video. This video is also available for your viewing pleasure in 720p hi-def. Just press the HD button on the player after you begin watching.

As many of you know, I documented the progress of Ed’s new shop as he moved in. But it has been about a year since a full tour of his shop has been done.
