Los Blancos – Nine

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

I’m having a hard time remembering who sent me the cigar that I am reviewing today. If it was you, let me know and I will give proper credit here. It may have been my pals over at Tex Cigars, who sent me a care package not too long ago. As always, I paired this cigar with water and jotted down my thoughts.

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Corojo Oscuro

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Size: 6.5 x 52

Price: Around $8.00

Pre-Smoke & Construction:

The wrapper looked a little oily with small to medium sized veins. There were no real defects to speak of. The wrapper smell was cedar, while the foot had almost no smell at all. The cigar was solidly and evenly packed like a rock. As a result, the draw was a little snug and somewhat annoying at first. The pre-light draw had an interesting sweetness that I couldn’t pin a flavor to.

The ash held for an inch, and the burn required a few minor touch up’s.

Flavor:

The first third: Despite the tight draw, there was a decent smoke volume with plenty of flavor. Far in the background I picked up earthy notes. What stood out was a flavor much like coffee. Passing smoke through the nose, there was a slight pepper with a sweet aftertaste. As I neared the second third, the smoke feel became thick and creamy.

The second third: Black coffee played tag with earthiness on which one would be strongest. I think coffee won. Like before, the slight pepper was there and had a slight kick. The smoke feel became creamier and sweeter, bordering on mocha or chocolate.

The last third: The coffee flavors became stronger and more espresso like. A dark sweetness like bitter chocolate entered the picture. It wasn’t a nasty bitter, in fact it was good. Earthy notes still lingered and came in and out of the background. The pepper really mellowed out but was strong enough to let me know it was still there. The smoke left a coating on the inside of my mouth and on the tongue that tasted like creamy coffee or espresso.

Conclusion:

This was a good medium bodied cigar that built into the full range. The snug draw was annoying at first, but I grew to ignore it. As time went on, it became less and less of an issue. As a whole, I really enjoyed it. This was a slow burner, so set some time aside to relax. With this cigar, a relaxing experience is sure to be had. See for yourself!
