Top Cigar Releases From IPCPR 2018
Monday, July 23rd, 2018I have been to several IPCPR tradeshows over my time in the cigar industry. In the past few, it seemed to be entering a dark period. With FDA Regulations looming, there was a dark cloud cast over the show. Attendance was dwindling, the mood to become one of worry instead of excitement and new products were their but limited. This year, however, saw a resounding return to form for the most anticipated event of the year for the cigar industry. Not only was in lighter in mood, it also showcased some of the most anticipated releases I’ve seen in quite some time.
While many companies brought this thunder this year, first we have to talk about Drew Estate. While the new Corona Viva sizes and the introduction of new cigarillos have been known for a few weeks, the company finally announced the release of two brand new lines for their Liga Privada brand. First is the store only Liga Privada 10th Anniversary, celebrating more than a decade of success with their highest rated cigar. Second, we have the Liga Privada H99, a new cigar that will feature a special grown Connecticut Corojo wrapper. These cigars were certainly the talk of the town, with several articles and even shout outs from other manufacturers.
General Cigar saw one of the most impressive amounts of releases this year. They are adding a new cigar to their CAO world edition with the introduction of the CAO Nicaragua. They are taken a bolder approach with their heritage lines with the new Hoyo La Amistad Black and a redesigned Punch from AJ Fernandez known as the Punch Diablo. Partagas, Macanudo and La Gloria Cubana are all receiving new releases as well, with amazing updated packaging and new enticing blends.
Altadis USA is also flexing quite a bit at this year’s shows. We are seeing new editions in tow of their most popular Montecristo lines. We are getting a brand new Montecristo Artisan Series and a stunning new addition to the Montecristo Grupo de Maestro line. We are also getting the first of a new Grupo de Maestro line, the H.Upmann Grupo de Maestro Connecticut, which we are all very excited about.
For the boutique, small batch aficionado, the 2018 IPCPR show unveiled a plethora of new and exciting cigars. Nick Melillo and the team at Foundation is bringing a new Tabernacle to shelves, this time with a special Havana seed wrapper grown on Nicks personal farm in Connecticut. Steve Saka showed up in style, showcasing a new line, the Sin Compromiso, and a slightly tweaked, stronger version of the Todos Las Dias known as Mas Fuerte.
Robert Caldwell brought three new editions of some of his best known cigars. We are excited to be getting an Eastern Standard Habano, A Long Live the King Maduro and a tweaked version of the Anastasia.
Day 3 at the 2017 IPCPR – H. Upmann AJ Fernandez
Thursday, July 13th, 2017New from Nicaragua- the Fabulous H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez cigars.
Thursday, May 4th, 2017A famous name in the world of Premium cigars, the H.Upmann brand has a long history of top-selling blends that date back to Cuba in 1844. Eventually forming a sister brand in the Dominican Republic where the legacy of excellence continues today, American smokers have come to rely on the Dominican H.Upmann cigar for its smooth and rich medium body flavor, along with a fabulous aroma.
We are excited to say that this storied brand has received a makeover, and its coming out of Nicaragua from one of the world’s hottest cigar makers. H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez cigars bring to the vanguard a selection of the finest aged tobaccos that include a seamless Sumatra wrapper from Ecuador over a vintage Nicaraguan Corojo 99 binder and fillers from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. These superb vitolas are offered in three popular sizes, the Churchill, at 7 inches by 54 ring gauge; Toro, 6 by 54; and the Robusto which weighs in at 5 by 52. The cigars ship in 20-count cedar boxes with powder blue trim, and each stick comes adorned with elegant powder blue and gold bands.
Already a huge hit with our in house “herfers”, H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez cigars deliver a rich tobacco sweetness accented with medium to full flavored notes of dark roast coffee, hazelnut, cedar, and subtle hints of spice. Not only are these new smokes super-delicious, but in true AJ and H.Upmann fashion, you can count on outstanding construction, a very slow and even burn, and an effortless draw.
From the stunning bands and boxes to the super-premium quality and flavor, H. Upmann by AJ Fernandez offers the discerning aficionado the utmost in beauty and cigar smoking perfection.
H. Upmann Sun Grown
Friday, February 11th, 2011I have no idea how or where I came across the cigar up for review today. There were some in my humidor, and I smoked them. That’s all I know. The H. Upmann Sun Grown is another offering from Altadis. There is no big story behind this smoke, so let’s get to it…
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sungrown
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Honduran and Nicaraguan
Size: No. 2 – 6 1/8 x 52
Price: Around $6.00
Pre-Smoke & Construction:
The wrapper looked nice, and had a couple good sized veins running throughout. It had a rugged look to it, but it didn’t look bad at all. The cigar was evenly and solidly packed. Towards the torpedo head, it was very firm. Despite this, the draw was good, offering slight resistance. The pre-light draw had a cedary taste. The wrapper pretty much smelled like my humidor – cedar. The foot had almost no odor at all, just a mild natural tobacco with a tinge of spice.
The burn required no corrections, and the ash held for around an inch.
Flavor:
The first third kicked things off with a nice pepper when exhaling through the nose. Wood was a dominant flavor and earthy notes were way behind it. Other then the nice little peppery punch, it was an easy smoke. As this third came to a close, things started to mellow a little, and I swore I detected some sweet notes.
The pepper dropped in strength in the second third, but it certainly didn’t go anywhere. The smoke became thicker and almost creamy. The woody flavors still dominated. That sweetness I spoke of before became a little stronger. There was another flavor in there that I couldn’t put my finger on. Whatever it was, it was faint.
The last third kept the same dominant woody flavor. The smoke did eventually become creamy. A sweet aftertaste coated the mouth and lips. That illusive flavor I spoke of… I determined it was leathery and earthy. The pepper kicked down another notch, but it still kept some of it’s zing.
Conclusion:
This was a good medium bodied cigar. It didn’t bring a lot of different flavors to the table. But what it did have was good. There was definitely no WOW factor, it was just a well rounded flavor profile. I think it met it’s price point. If you are a medium bodied smoker, this is worth checking out.
H. Upmann 2010 Edicion Limitada
Friday, December 10th, 2010I could only get my hands on one of these cigars for this review. And that was only because it was Rick’s last one. So thanks for the donation! I had a hard time finding out any information on this particular cigar. Gus Mantas chimed in before this review and said he liked the 2009 better. I literally had to measure the length and use a ring gauge guide, and I couldn’t tell you what the price is. But from what I could gather, this appears to be a real Cuban and not a knock-off, which makes it review worthy in my opinion. As always, I paired this cigar with water and offer you my thoughts.
Wrapper/Binder/Filler: Cuba
Size: 6 1/4 X 50
Price: ???
Pre-Smoke & Construction:
The wrapper had a toothy appearance with no real flaws. The odor coming off of the wrapper and foot was a mild wood. When squeezing the cigar, there was a slight give, but it wasn’t spongy. The pre-light draw was perfect, and had earthy/woody notes.
The burn required several corrections in the first half. One of those corrections was major. The ash held for about an inch.
Flavor:
The first third started off with an interesting smoke feel and flavor that was almost buttery. There was also a woody and earthy component. Smoke volume was plentiful. Simple but not bad at all.
The second third picked up in body a little, but remained in the medium to upper medium bodied range. There was a nice spice when passing smoke though the nose. It was peppery and had a nice punch, but didn’t burn. The woodiness remained and became less earthy. A coffee-ish flavor kicked in, and everything just blended well together. There was also an unidentified flavor that I notice is unique to Cuban tobacco. I can’t really find anything to compare it with, but it is nice.
The last third may have crept into the full bodied range. The pepper seemed to become more smoother, and boarded on being sweet. The woody and coffee flavors melded together along with that natural tobacco flavor I mentioned in the second third. The smoke feel became thick and creamy. A coating was left in the mouth and lips after exhaling. This was easily my favorite third of the cigar.
Conclusion:
This was a very good medium to full bodied cigar. I don’t get a lot of chances to smoke Cuban cigars. Like their “Legal” counterparts, I get mixed results. Some are great, some are not. I still enjoy the Partagas Serie P and think it is better than this one. But I’m not saying this was was not good. If you get the chance to try this cigar, I think it is worth it. Very nice…
